Another world first for York
21 November 2025 - 23 December 2025
This is Joseph Gilgun’s (aka Woody, Vinnie or Proinsias Cassidy) first ever public art installation.
Arranged and produced in collaboration with The Art of Protest Gallery
This, first large-scale free to view public installation, follows Joe’s successful Fine Art debut over the past 12 months in 3 independent UK galleries. His love of Northern UK means one of those chosen galleries is here in York.
Much of Joe’s creative life, whether on canvas or in performance, has been shaped by his lived experience with bipolar disorder, BPD, anxiety and periods of depression. He has long been one of the most sincere, unvarnished and compassionate voices speaking about mental health today. Joseph often describes his art as a form of catharsis, an attempt to process the realities, frustrations and fears that accompany his mental health challenges. He has spoken openly about moments of deep self-doubt, agoraphobia and the struggle to carry on with everyday tasks, as well as how these experiences fuel both the emotional charge and the vulnerability visible in his art.
This new installation is another marker in Joe’s varied career. He channels the turbulence, humour, shame, resilience and defiance that Joe has never hidden, choosing instead to transform them into something that speaks directly to others who may feel the same. The result is a piece of outsider art that is not only visually powerful but also a stunning example of his style.
The Art of Protest Gallery, just around the corner from here, exhibits a permanent collection of Joseph’s work, including original paintings and Signed Limited Edition artwork.
