"This piece depicts someone walking home along a street in Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. He passes a well-known piece of graffiti painted on a derelict building that reads Home Sweet Home. I wanted to paint a figure in an utterly familiar contemporary pose - walking while scrolling, absorbed in a phone and largely oblivious to what's happening around them. The phrase Home Sweet Home immediately made me think of those traditional embroidered samplers and decorative wall hangings that people used to display in their homes - sentimental statements of comfort, belonging and domestic life. In this painting, that familiar phrase is relocated from the private interior to the public street and re-imagined through a contemporary lens. I like the idea that this painting becomes a kind of 21st-century version of those messages people once hung on their walls: still reflecting ideas of home and modern life, but now shaped by our relationship with technology, movement and the spaces we pass through every day."
