"As well as paste-ups, I enjoy documenting graffiti and street art in my urban landscape paintings and juxtaposing them with someone absorbed in their device. This is John Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter. The boarded-up shop in the background used to sell hot chocolate, and I love the graffiti at the top - someone has written "beer" over the words 'We all love hot chocolate.' When working out the composition, I decided that I wanted to tease the viewer's eye down Back Turner Street, the side street visible in the painting. I wanted to suggest the wider area and imply that more is happening beyond the edge of the canvas. It also adds visual interest and helps counterbalance the large red rectangle of the poster."
