Die Weiẞe Rose, Magnus Gjoen's latest artwork, draws on the visual language of historic European decorative arts. Three versions; one set against an Eau de Nil green background, the other 24ct Gold Leaf and the third white, the skull contains a floral image sourced from the German Wallpaper Museum in Kassel, referencing early paper-based wallpapers and the restrained techniques of 18th- and 19th-century design. Free from later embellishments, the imagery reflects a time when pattern, pigment, and symbolism carried quiet authority.
The off-white florals sit against a Victorian Blue background, evoking yesteryear interiors and inherited taste. Among them appear white roses, alluding to the White Rose of York and Yorkshire, symbols of renewal and continuity, while also echoing the moral resistance of Die Weiße Rose, the German anti-Nazi movement. As with much of Gjoen's work, the skull becomes a vessel for history and belief, reminding us that beneath ornament and power, all glory returns to bone and from that truth, new beginnings can emerge.
