She was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize and is the only person, male or female, to receive two Nobel Prizes in different scientific fields.
Through her legendary achievements in science and an obsessive dedication to her work, Curie set a shining example for future generations of researchers. This chemical heroine was indeed one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century.

Technique
Atomic! was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, photograms made from antique slides of microscopic cells, and a Blue Morpho butterfly.
The model's portrait was taken on film and hand printed in the darkroom then the other elements collaged on top. The microscopic cells were printed in the darkroom from antique medical slides and the blue morpho butterfly was placed inside the photographic enlarger and printed.
The butterfly symbolises rebirth, life, hope and metamorphosis and is used to represent and celebrate Curies life's work. A pioneer in the study of radiation, Curie had no idea of the dangers inherent in exposure to radioactive elements, working with radioactive materials ultimately killed her. She died of a blood disease in 1934. At the expense of her own health, Marie's efforts protected others from dangerous exposure to radiation. She gave her life so other people could live.
After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then printed onto the paper by exposure to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once the image is fixed it is hand finished with chemical washed and heat treated zinc leaf, producing a varied patina of rich pinks, orange and gold tones.

Signed by the Artist.

Cyanotype, handmade paper, papercut collage

Inspiration
This artwork was inspired by Boudicca, ancient warrior Queen of the Celtic Iceni tribe, and an important British cultural folk hero. Her name is derived from the word victorious, she led a rebellion to fight the Roman army.
Boudica had the charisma and spirit to unite tribes, lead armies and shake one of the greatest empires the world had ever known. British history is marked by women who were not cowed by the powerful, who would not be silenced, who had the courage to stand up, to be seen and heard.
Though she lost her battle and her cause, Boudicca is celebrated today as a national heroine and a universal symbol of the human desire for freedom and justice. She united thousands of ancient Britons, stood up for what she believed in, fought against social injustice; she was known as a pagan queen, an unruly woman and a valiant warrior, this is a celebration of all unorthodox women. Her legacy reminds us of the power of resilience and the enduring spirit of those who refuse to bow to tyranny.
Boudicca's story resonates through the ages as a symbol of unwavering strength and the unbreakable bond between a leader and her people in the pursuit of justice and autonomy. She remains a testament to the resilience and courage of women who have stood as defenders of their homes and champions of their people throughout history.
With this piece I wanted to turn the conversation away from misogynistic ire and suspicion stemming from a deep rooted distaste for women in power and instead convey a sense of unity, empowerment and bold feminine strength.
Boudicca had many roles in her life; a multifaceted and complex heroic identity was born. She was a rebel, queen, warrior, widow, mother, woman. She was celebrated by authors, artists and poets who saw her as a symbol of freedom, rebellion, courage and strength of a nation and at the same time also a suitable heroine for children and young women giving her the name Mother England.
The colours in this cyanotype artwork reflect the exact hues of the deep blue plant pigment woad (Isatis tinctoria) used by ancient Britons as warpaint during Boudicca's reign. I expose all my pieces in natural light for up to a couple of weeks. Printing in all weather conditions, doing everything by eye and in the most organic way possible, this enables me to be at one with each piece I create and capture the true essence of Mother Nature within. .

Technique
Queen Boudicca- A Life in Reflection Study was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture and hand drawn illustrations, etchings and photographs of horses and tin toy models.
After coating the handmade paper sheets with light-sensitive chemistry, they are left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negatives are contact printed onto the paper by exposure to daylight (UV rays). A visionary marine biologist, conservationist and author, she revolutionised the environmental movement with her compelling work.
Carson's eloquent writing combined scientific rigour with a deep sense of wonder for the environment, making her a powerful advocate for conservation. Carson's legacy endures as a champion of ecological awareness, sparking the modern environmental movement and inspiring ongoing action to protect the planet.
Best known for her groundbreaking sea trilogy-Under the Sea-Wind (1941), The Sea Around Us (1951), and The Edge of the Sea (1955)-Carson illuminated the intricate beauty and balance of marine ecosystems. Her vivid storytelling deepened our understanding of the ocean and helped lay the foundation for a new era of the modern environmental movement, inspiring a generation of future conservationists.

Technique
Symphony of the Sea (Rachel Carson's Love Letter) was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, scientific specimen illustrations, photographs and illustrations of marine botanical materials, marine life, fish, corals and sharks. All these symbols are representative of her studies and passion for marine ecosystems- layered into the artwork. These elements serve as a reflection of Carson's connection to the sea and her tireless efforts to protect the environment. The combination of scientific and natural imagery highlights both her intellect and her reverence for the natural world.
After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. By going beyond the blue, I am creating a majestic modern aesthetic to this antiquarian photographic technique. I hand finish my pieces with precious and chemically treated metals to enhance the textural quality of the surface, revealing hidden details and creating an evolving luminous landscape. Allowing each separate element to support the others, not one overpowering the other, adding depth and uncovering the non perfect surface beauty below. Using naturally occurring chemicals, cotton and precious metals combined with the sun's rays and water is one of the purest forms of photosensitive image making that has stood the testament of time from its discovery in 1842.

Signed by the Artist.
